When CritterKleen founder Addy picked up an orphaned, mange infested wombat joey, he experimented with Tasmanian Kunzea oils and quickly saw impressive results.
After mixing a variety of natural products derived from natural oils distilled from plants on Flinders Island, he started to see immediate results with the crusty skin falling off and hair growing back on the new skin underneath. Sure he came to this point with a bit of a head start, born into a family that made a living from extracting oils from plants. That said, the results were pretty impressive and when he crossed paths with some Victorian medical researchers in one of those serendipitous things that happen, they too were impressed. The next step was to run some biological tests in a controlled university laboratory and they indicated enough to encourage more work.
Having seen CritterKleen® rejuvenating the skin and hair growing back quickly, the laboratory tests showed cultured skin cells responding to the mix in unexpected ways. We now suspect the infected skin cells on the wombats literally die and fall off the animal and then the parasite itself causing the infection is exposed to the mix. Whether CritterKleen® caused the mites to actually die or simply be repelled is what we are working on.
CritterKleen® is 100% derived from natural products which makes it pretty different from some of the chemical treatments being touted. The solution is readily absorbed into skin even without rubbing. It smells amazing. But there is so much more to understand. We are seeing the product have amazing impact on companion animals with chronic rashes/flea bites/scratches so we are pretty excited about where it may end up and the contribution it might make to animal health.
